Kartiningsih Cohen was born in
Surakarta
, Central Java, Indonesia.
She studied folk painting on glass in
Cirebon
,
West Java
and has exhibited in the
U.S.
and
Indonesia
. She is both a painter and
performer in Artists in Exile Glasgow and is also a member of Naga Mas,
the Glasgow Gamelan Group. and
has lived in the
United
States
,
the
Netherlands
and the
United
Kingdom
.
She is both a painter and a performer in Artists in Exile Glasgow
.
She has performed classical Central Javanese dance since childhood. In the
1990’s, she studied popular and folk dances of
West
Java
.
She has danced and conducted dance workshops at
Yale
University
,
and with Naga Mas has performed the roles of Sinta in Anoman,
the Envoy (2002) and Sekar Kedaton in The
Tale of Suta Kesuma. (2003). She is also dancer and associate
choreographer in Naga Mas’ most recent production, Smaradahana:
The Burning of Love (2004).
